Obituary

John Henry Freeman, Jr, age 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Dallas, North Carolina, on July 11, 2026, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by the love and presence of his family. Born on October 14, 1947, in Gastonia, North Carolina, John was the son of the late John Henry Freeman, Sr. and Alma Ethelene Lanier Freeman.

John graduated from Dallas High School and was soon drafted into the United States Army; he was sent to Vietnam where he served as a helicopter door gunner, helping with rescue missions of his fellow soldiers.

John was deeply rooted in Dallas, NC where he spent his entire life. After his service in the Army, John started his business, Freeman Container, Inc. He set an example as a dedicated, hardworking, ethical and generous man. Always willing to go out of his way to help a friend or a person in need. John loved fishing in his pass-time, watching the Dallas Cowboys, watching Old Westerns and definitely a good steak.

John will be greatly missed by his family, he was the beloved husband of Paula Freeman, with whom he shared 57 years of partnership, mutual respect, and enduring affection. He was a devoted father to his daughters, Paige Odom (Jason) and Brooke Lineberger (Keith); As a grandfather, John delighted in his granddaughters, Savannah Odom and Ava Lineberger. His girls were the love of his life, and he was so proud to be called "Papaw". He is also survived by his sister, Judy Patterson, his brother, Jeff Freeman; and his nieces and nephews.

Throughout his life, John displayed quiet strength and kindness. His dedication to family was evident in every role he held—as husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

A visitation to honor John’s life and legacy will be held from 10:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m., Friday, July 17, 2026, at Antioch Lutheran Church, 330 Old NC 277 Loop Rd, Dallas, NC 28034.
